Our Story

A Juno Beach Tradition
Since 1989
Ross and Beth Matheson

Ross Matheson and his wife Mary Beth opened Captain Charlie’s Original Reef Grill in 1989, only two years after moving to the Juno Beach area of Florida from Toronto, where he owned and operated the successful Duchess of Markham. It did not take long for Matheson to realize the untapped potential for a restaurant in the Juno Beach area. Says Ross, “This area is one of the biggest fruit and vegetable producers in the country, and with an ocean full of fish outside your back door, the food here should be spectacular.” And once you’ve experienced Captain Charlie’s, you’ll know it is.

But fine food is only part of what makes Captain Charlie’s that special place to dine. The wine list and Ross’s reasonable pricing will be a pleasant surprise for first-time patrons. As a 16-time winner of the Wine Spectator “Award of Excellence”, Ross hand picks each pairing depending on available catch and time of year. The atmosphere at Captain Charlie’s is laid-back, and worthy of the easy going beach life here in Juno Beach. Patrons enjoy the open kitchen, the great wine list, and truly wonderful cuisine at Captain Charlie’s.

For over 34 years, Captain Charlie’s has been a fine dining fixture in Juno Beach. Now the tradition continues as longtime employees Sharkey and Lena join the management team. So, whether you are a native of Juno Beach or just finding Captain Charlie’s for the first time, we hope you will enjoy Captain Charlies for years to come.

Ross, Mary Beth, and now Sharkey, and Lena all welcome you to Captain Charlie’s Original Reef Grill, a Juno Beach neighborhood tradition!
